Ambigram tattoo generator

An ambigram tattoo reads as one word upright and another upside down. This generator shows both readings in five lettering styles, stacked by default or overlaid when you want to compare strokes, and grades every letter pair — eleven rotate cleanly, six letters fight the rotation.

Roman capitals — the most forgiving base for a first ambigram.

Turn your screen, or your phone, a half turn. A working ambigram reads as the second word with no help from context.

Letter pair check

An ambigram works pair by pair, not word by word. The first letter of the top word has to share a drawing with the last letter of the bottom word, and so on inward. This is where a design either has a chance or does not.

How to use this ambigram tattoo generator

Put the word you want read upright in the first field and the word you want read upside down in the second. Leaving the second field empty is a normal case: it makes an ambigram of one word with itself, which is what most single-name designs are.

The preview stacks the two readings by default — the upright word above, the rotated one below — because that is the arrangement in which both are legible. Ticking “Overlay both readings” puts them on top of each other at reduced opacity; that view is for judging where strokes coincide, not for reading. The lettering menu applies one typeface to both words, and the note under it says what that face is good and bad at.

The table below the preview is the part worth your time. It grades each letter pair — first against last, second against second-to-last — as rotating cleanly, needing stylizing, or fighting the rotation, and a design with several in the last group is one an artist will have to redraw rather than typeset. “Rotate the preview” turns the whole thing 180 degrees so you can check the second reading without turning your head, and “Download PNG” exports exactly the arrangement currently on screen.

Rotational ambigrams versus mirror ambigrams

An ambigram is a word designed to survive a transformation. The tattoo version is nearly always rotational: turn the design a half turn and a second word appears in the same strokes. Mirror ambigrams, which read the same in a reflection, exist but are rare on skin because nobody sees a tattoo in a mirror except its owner.

The design constraint is unusual. Ordinary lettering only has to be legible once, so the artist optimises every letter on its own. An ambigram letter has two jobs at once, and the compromise between them is where the craft lives — and where a typeset preview stops being enough.

Why most ambigram generators disappoint

A generator that types your word in a font and rotates a copy has not made an ambigram. It has made two words on top of each other. The result looks convincing on a screen because your brain already knows what both words say, and it collapses the moment somebody who has not been told tries to read the second one.

Every ambigram tool we could open in August 2026 worked exactly this way — typography plus rotation, including the ones with “AI” in the domain name. Two of the five asked for money or a captcha before showing anything, and the highest-ranking one offers no download at all. What none of them do is tell you which letter pairs are the problem, which is the one question worth answering before an artist starts drawing.

What this page doesShows both readings in a lettering style that rotates well, and grades every letter pair so you know before the consultation which parts are the problem.
What it deliberately does not doIt does not invent shared letterforms. That step is hand-drawing, and any tool that claims to automate it is selling you a rotated font.

Word pairs that tend to work

Three properties predict most of the outcome, and all three can be checked before anyone draws anything. They are also the reason two names of similar length succeed far more often than a name paired with a long word.

Similar lengthEqual letter counts mean every letter has exactly one partner. A difference of more than two letters forces one glyph to carry two, which is where legibility usually dies.
Few awkward lettersSix letters fight the rotation whatever they meet: f, g, j, k, t and v. The table flags every pair containing one, and three in a word means a redesign.
Round, closed shapeso, s, x and z rotate onto themselves. A pair with several of these has slack to absorb the harder letters elsewhere in the word.

Taking an ambigram to a tattoo artist

Bring the pair, the verdict table and one sentence about which reading matters more — the full list of what makes a useful consultation is in what to bring to a tattoo consultation. That last part is the decision an artist cannot make for you: in almost every ambigram one direction ends up cleaner, and knowing which word should win the argument saves an entire revision round.

Ask for the design at final size on paper before the appointment. An ambigram that reads on a monitor at 300 pixels tall can be illegible at four centimeters, because the shared strokes depend on detail that the skin will not hold. If you want a plain version of the same name as a fallback, set it in the tattoo font generator and compare the two side by side.

When an ambigram is the wrong idea

Skip the ambigram if either word must be perfectly legible — a child's name, a memorial date, a language you do not read. Compromise is structural in this format, not a sign of a weak artist, and the word that reads less well is not always the one you expected. Skip it too if the placement is small or high-movement: an ambigram on a wrist or a finger has to survive the same ink spread as any lettering, with twice as much detail to lose.

For a coded design that stays private but does not have to be read twice, the Morse code tattoo generator solves a similar wish with far fewer compromises. If you are weighing AI tools for the artwork around the lettering, our comparison of AI tattoo generators sorts them by what each one is actually for, and the prompt guide covers getting usable output from a general assistant. If the two words themselves are still undecided, a randomly drawn design brief is a faster way to find out what you reject.

Questions people ask

What is an ambigram tattoo?
An ambigram tattoo is lettering designed to read as one word normally and as another word when the design is turned a half turn. Most tattoo ambigrams are rotational: two names, or a name and a date, sharing the same set of strokes so both readings use the same ink.
Can any two words be made into an ambigram?
Almost any pair can be forced, but not every pair stays readable. An ambigram works letter by letter: the first letter of one word must share a drawing with the last letter of the other. Pairs such as n and u rotate cleanly, while letters with descenders like g and j usually have to be distorted.
Is this ambigram generator free?
The Inkantic ambigram generator is free with no account and no email step. The preview, the letter pair check and the PNG export all run in the browser, so the two words a visitor types are never sent anywhere. There is no generation limit because nothing is generated on a server.
Will a tattoo artist copy an ambigram design exactly?
No, and they should not. A typeset preview sets one existing typeface against itself — both words in the same face, stacked by default or overlaid if you tick the box — so you can see whether a pair has a chance. A finished ambigram needs custom letterforms drawn by hand, because the shared strokes have to be invented rather than borrowed from letters that were designed to read one way.
Which words work best in an ambigram tattoo?
Short words of similar length work best, ideally four to seven letters each. Equal length means every letter has a partner, and short words keep each shared glyph simple enough to read at tattoo size. Pairs heavy in o, s, x and z have the most slack, because those letters rotate onto themselves.
How long does an ambigram tattoo take to design?
Designing a rotational ambigram is hand-drawing rather than typing, so expect a separate design round before the appointment: the artist invents letterforms that satisfy two readings at once. Arriving with a graded pair of words shortens that round, because the hard letters are already identified.
