How to use this Morse code tattoo generator

Type the name, date or short phrase into the field at the top and the layout redraws as you type. Characters Morse has no code for are dropped rather than guessed at, and the line under the field names each one, so check it before you go further.

Two controls change the drawing. Layout picks between one continuous line, where the seven-unit word gap is drawn at full width, and one word per line, where that gap becomes a line break instead — the same choice as reading a sentence across a page or down a column. Dot size sets the unit everything else is measured from: a dash is three of it, a letter gap three, a word gap seven. The vertical checkbox turns the whole run through ninety degrees for a spine or an inner arm.

“Download SVG” gives your artist a vector file that scales to any size without softening the edges, which matters because the dots are the smallest marks on the design. “Copy dots and dashes” gives the plain-text form for a message or a consultation note. The spacing is the design

Morse code carries meaning in two places: the length of each mark, and the length of each gap. A dash is three times a dot, the gap inside a letter is one unit, the gap between letters is three, and the gap between words is seven. Change those ratios and the sequence stops decoding, however good it looks.

Ignoring the gaps is the most common failure in Morse tattoos, and it is not limited to amateurs. We measured the rendered geometry of four Morse tattoo tools in August 2026: none of the four reproduced the standard ratios in the image. The closest used 1 : 2.5 for dot to dash and halved the word gap to 3.5 units; another rendered the code as text characters with even letter-spacing, where proportions do not exist at all. A design built from those outputs reads as decoration rather than as a message — fine if that was the intention, disappointing if it was not.

What the two layouts do differently

The layout control above changes which part of the standard the drawing carries. On one line, every gap is geometric, including the seven-unit space between words, so the whole string decodes from the image alone. One word per line trades that seven-unit gap for a line break: the code inside each word stays exact, but the word separation is now typographic rather than part of the message.

Pick by length, and read the length off the drawing rather than off the word. The default here, “Amelia Rose”, is 85 units wide — 170 millimeters at a two-millimeter dot, which is most of a forearm. Beyond roughly 60 units a single line outgrows the common placements, and stacking words keeps it readable at the cost of that one ratio — worth saying to your artist out loud rather than discovering at the stencil stage.

Placements that suit a coded line

Morse wants a straight run and a surface that does not fold. A collarbone, the inner forearm, the outer edge of a rib and the spine all give a long, flat line. The vertical switch exists for the last two: rotating the layout keeps the dot-to-gap ratio intact, which rotating a finished raster image does not always do.

Which placements hold a thin line and which lose it is the subject of our tattoo placement guide. Fingers, wrists and the sides of the hands are the places to avoid. Ink migrates fastest there, and the first casualty is the one-unit gap between symbols — the exact feature the code depends on. Length is also less predictable than it looks. Running thirty-one common five-letter names through this generator gives widths from 58 to 122 millimeters at a two-millimeter dot, with a median of 90: letter choice drives that spread far more than letter count does. Measure your own string rather than trusting an average.

Check it decodes before you commit

Every mistake in a Morse tattoo is invisible to the person carrying it, because almost nobody reads Morse fluently. That makes independent verification the only real check, and it costs four steps before the appointment rather than a cover-up afterwards.

When Morse code is the wrong idea

Morse suits short, meaningful strings: a name, a date, one word. It does not suit sentences — a seven-word phrase becomes a meter of dots long before it becomes elegant. It is also the wrong choice if the point is that other people read it easily, because most people will simply see a pattern.

Morse is not the only code that draws as marks. Binary spends seven or eight marks on every character, where Morse spends one to four on a letter and five on a digit, so the same name runs far longer — and binary has no spacing standard behind it at all.
